Fall Army Worm and Green Mealies Farming in the Lowveld: A Dilemma


With Lowveld farmers preparing to go into the Winter Maize Planting, there is a lot of uncertainty regarding the planting of green mealies due to one of the worst pests of maize, the fall army worm (FAW). With the high costs of preventing its control, it makes growing green mealies not viable or reduced profitability. This has serious adverse consequences on the entire value chain for suppliers, retailers, and farmers, on the input supply chains; and vendors, hawkers and road- side marketers along the roads in the output markets.
