The structure
Standing at a dominating height of 8.54m with a fencing surround of 200 meters and concrete paving of 58 000 square meters, the structure boasts an unequaled presence immediately visible from the Lavumisa border. It has 19 different rooms each serving specific functions towards quality agriculture produce. It also has a generator, 12 air cons and varying electrical equipments that support its continued overall functionality.
The sate-of-the-art Lavumisa structure
Purpose
The structure serves as a fresh-produce pack-house for farmers in the Lavumisa community. It targets to economically benefit over 200 individual farmers found in this community by selling demand-driven crops through NAMBOARD to both national and international markets. Bringing such structures close to these farming communities ensures not only the quality of the produce but also secures efficiency in the value chain as well as an increase in quantity of supplies. Innovativeness
SWADE has thus far administered the construction of pack-houses nationwide through facilitating partnership between HVCHP and NAMBOARD. In response to the growing demands of crops such as baby vegetables; the design of this infrastructure had to differ slightly by having both high & medium care facilities which now cater for ready to cook mixed vegetables as well as packed baby veggies. Other facilities in this structure include change rooms, laundry rooms, offices, a reception area and a boardroom.
Implementation
This project received funding from the European Union through the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development. It consists of 3 Lots. Lavumisa is the first completed Lot, next will be Nhlangano and Msahweni making a combined total project cost of E24M. Its purpose is to promote the commercialization of Agriculture to boost economic levels in rural areas. SWADE through the HVCHP is responsible for the designs and on-going monitoring of construction and NAMBOARD will run operations until local farmers are sufficiently capacitated. The overall project is due for completion by latest 2020.The structure’s reception area and board-room .Passage leading to tea area, laundry and change rooms
Community Benefit
As highlighted, the project aims at alleviating poverty in rural areas through commercializing agriculture for sustainable socio-economic growth. This structure is set to achieve exactly that; through its establishment, the Lavumisa Community will be encouraged to grow marketable crops that guarantee growth in income at household level. There were already 20 people employed from the community during construction. On-going trainings by HVCHP will continue to capacitate both the farmers and the packhouse employees to maximize usage and ensure sustenance of structure. Furthermore, LUSIP II farmers will equally benefit once they too have begun diversified farming.
